This session will review common foot and ankle conditions where surgery is frequently considered, and contrast the natural history and outcomes of high‑quality non‑operative care with those of surgical intervention. We will focus on conditions with robust evidence for conservative management (e.g. ankle sprains, Achilles pathology, plantar fasciitis, osteochondral lesions of the talus, fifth metatarsal fractures) and those where surgery offers clear added value (e.g. unstable ankle fractures, chronic lateral ankle instability, end‑stage ankle arthritis, selected hallux valgus). The emphasis will be on how physiotherapists can use current evidence to guide referral, set expectations, and collaborate with surgeons in shared decision‑making.
Who should attend: Physiotherapists and musculoskeletal/sports physiotherapy clinicians and allied health professionals involved in lower‑limb rehabilitation
Patient population covered: Adults and adolescents with common foot and ankle musculoskeletal conditions seen in outpatient, sports, and primary care settings.
Dr Derek Park is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon with Park Orthopaedics at Gleneagles Medical Centre, Singapore. He was previously a Senior Consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and a visiting consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Park’s provides care in the generality of Orthopaedic surgery and he has a sub-specialty interest in surgery of the foot and ankle. In particular, he sub-specialises in reconstructive and minimally invasive surgery for complex deformities in diabetic patients.
He graduated from the University of Auckland Medical School in New Zealand in 2001, winning the clinical excellence award in his final year. He was a research fellow on the academic team at the University College London and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore publishing research on cartilage disease and rare bone tumours. He undertook postgraduate Orthopaedic Surgical training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, and trained at several teaching hospitals in London including the Royal London Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and the Royal Free Hospital. Working in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom for 17 years has taught him to place patient care at the heart of all he does.
Dr Park is uniquely dual-fellowship trained in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery and Foot & Ankle Surgery. He was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowships expanding his expertise in India, France and Germany. He obtained the Intercollegiate Fellowship in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2010. He was a Consultant at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, before moving to Singapore.
Dr Derek Park was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He also held the position of Clinical Lead for the Multi-Disciplinary Diabetic Foot Service and was a member of the NHG Clinical Workgroup on Diabetic Feet at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Dr Derek Park won the Service Champion Award and Best Postgraduate Teacher Award at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Dr Derek Park’s contributions to the medical field extend beyond his clinical work and his teaching. He has published twenty-three articles in peer-reviewed journals, authored two textbook chapters on Foot and Ankle Surgery and is on the editorial review panel for British, European and American Orthopaedic surgery journals.
He continues to be a Visiting Consultant to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and is registered with both the General Medical Council in the UK and Singapore Medical Council as a specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr Park is a former rugby player and avid rugby fan and supports children’s rugby as a volunteer coach at the Tanglin Rugby Club. He is also a volunteer mentor for SHINE, a youth charity in Singapore.
